Gone Baby Gone (2007)

Directed by: Ben Affleck
Starring: Casey Affleck, Michelle Monaghan, Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris

I must admit, when I first heard that Ben Affleck was directing and co-writing the screenplay for a new movie that stars his younger brother Casey (?) - I had visions of an unwelcome sequel to Gigli. (editor's note: Don't forget that Affleck co-wrote the excellent Good Will Hunting)

10 minutes into Gone Baby Gone and all those thoughts went out the window. Ben has done an amazing job of directing this movie “directly from the street”. Sans all of the Hollywood fluff that stains most movies of this nature. The characters are authentically real, gritty, ugly, all the way down to Titus Welliver’s fantastic 70’s porn mustache.

Amy Ryan in a career-making role portrays the less than desirable mother of a missing 4-year-old girl. The plot quietly screams with emotion. Toss in an incredible supporting cast of Ed Harris as the disgruntled Boston detective, and the powerhouse performance of Morgan Freeman as the hard as nails police captain. You have an incredible movie!

Oh yeah, did I mention this Casey guy? He certainly holds his own as a private dick hired by the missing child’s panicked Aunt. With his somber partner Michelle Monaghan in tow, they are the low-key glue that keeps this story sticking in all of the little parts that pack together for an amazing twist and turn cinematic ride.

Myself- a father of 3 little kids, there were moments where this movie made me want to take out anyone that looked at my children the wrong way! My wife has kindly asked me not to include her in movies of this nature. If you are looking for a typical tinsel-town happy film, forget it. If you want a movie with strong performances, a powerful script and the undying need to wash your hands…this is it. After viewing, it might take a couple days to get your hands clean.
