Amateur Porn Star Killer (2007)

You know, usually I like to watch a film twice before I write a review. Once to sit back and absorb/enjoy the film and once to look at it with a more critical eye. Having said that, I have only watched Amateur Porn Star Killer once and don't intend to watch it again for a while. Why do you ask? Am I just being lazy? Was it THAT bad? No and no. What Amateur Porn Star Killer IS is simply THAT FUCKED UP. Shane Ryan and Michiko Jimenez have managed to make one of the creepiest, traumatically erotic pieces of film I've seen in a LONG time. Shot on virtually NO budget, Shane says in the special features that it was made for around $45, Amateur Porn Star Killer is the story of a young man with a video camera who drives around looking for an even younger girl to pick up, film a sexual conquest of, then murder in cold blood. For those keeping score, yes, Amateur Porn Star Killer is a simulated "snuff film."

The opening sceen just sets the mood for the whole dark, twisted film. You get the familiar, "inspired by true events" line and then with no buffer or warning you get a nude female being pushed to the floor by a nude male. you see her arm come up in a defensive manner and you see him swing once, really powerfully, straight down at the woman. You have just met Brandon. With that the film cuts to the Brandon in the final stages of preparing to go out. In the corner the whole time, presenting an oddly surreal atmosphere is a small picture in picture video of a young attractive woman playfully stripping for the camera, held by Brandon, and engaging in fairly explicit sexual contact with him. While this is going on, Brandon gets in his car and drives down the street to a stripmall type area where he sees a VERY young looking Stacy. After some relatively harmless, somewhat porn film inspired, chit chat, Stacy gets into Brandon's car to "go find something to do." They of course end up back at Brandon's hotel room with camera in hand.

What follows is a derranged, skin crawling film that it at times erotic and at times horrific to watch. This is TOTALLY film that makes you wonder to yourself, "am I a bad person because I have an erection right now knowing what's going to happen later?" The dialog between Brandon and Stacy is believable and frightening. You can completely believe that Stacy is just a poor attention starved girl who is desperate for attention and willing to sleep with a complete stranger if only for the brief illusion of love. Brandon on the other hand is the definition of the word predator. He firmly but delicately pushes and pushes Stacy until he gets everything he wants from her and once he's done, he smothers her to weaken her then beats her to death. Yeah, this film is brutal.

One of the things that makes this film SO hard to watch is that there are some EXTREMELY explicit sexual scenes that, being a male, are very arousing if you isolate them from the rest of the film. Taken in context though, they make you feel extremely damaged if you have even the most mundane arousal from them. This is not a film that leaves your mind's eye very easily. Shane Ryan has done a VERY good job in creating a film that make you question your definition of erotica and one that will leave you unable to view "amateur" adult material in the same way ever again.
