Mike’s August DVD Picks

Hey people, Mike here. August is here and it's a pretty big month for DVD releases. There's a LOT of good stuff coming out this month so sit back and strap in as I guide you through the masses of shit to find the jewels.

The Cosby Show: Season 1
Release Date: 8/2/05

Really, who doesn’t like The Cosby Show. Isn’t it un-American not to? I literally grew up with Bill Cosby on my TV. This show was the Brady Bunch of the 80’s and we all NEED to add this DVD set to your collection.

The Dukes of Hazzard: The Complete Fourth Season
Release Date: 8/2/05

One more season of the Duke boys to add to the stack!

Huckleberry Finn
Release Date: 8/9/05

Man I loved this and Tom Sawyer growing up. They were both GREAT films and a lot of fun to watch. Tom Sawyer was a little more humorous and laid back while Huckleberry Finn got into racial issues a bit more and really made the Finn character grow. Very good stuff.

Kung Fu Hustle
Release Date: 8/9/05

Another great film from the man who brought you Shaolin Soccer! Stephen Chow makes some amazingly fun movies and Kung Fu Hustle is no different. Trust me, you need this DVD.

The Muppet Show: Season One
Release Date: 8/9/05

OK, I admit it. I have a Miss Piggy fetish. Well, not really, but I do REALLY like The Muppet Show…or anything else by Jim Henson and/or Frank Oz. They were true visionaries and Henson’s death was a major loss to TV and film.

Thunder Cats: Volume One
Release Date: 8/9/05

Thunder Cats has to be, without a doubt, one of THE coolest cartoons ever! A bunch of half human, half big cat people running around with super powers, battling villains with names like Mum-Ra and trying to save a distant future Earth. What is there to possibly not love about that?

Tom Sawyer
Release Date: 8/9/05

I already said what I have to say about this one. Just buy it.

Stand up comedy rules and Chappelle is better than most.

More stand up comedy! Carlin is my hero.

Nip/Tuck: The Complete Second Season
Release Date: 8/30/05

I love this show! It’s so wrong that it’s great. I also love the Bond style cover to this set…especially since Julian McMahon was one of the many actors briefly rumored to be the next James Bond.

Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior
Release Date: 8/30/05

If you only see one movie from my Picks of the Month then please, I beg you, make it Ong-Bak. This movie will own your ass like you would simply not believe and mark my words, Tony Jaa will be HUGE one day. We’re talking Jacky Chan in a non-slapstick, very serious kind of way. The first time I saw Ong-Bak all the way through was at a free advance screening and I have RARELY heard the kind of applause every other minute of a film like I heard that night. This is by FAR the coolest DVD coming out this month.

Pirates of Silicon Valley
Release Date: 8/30/05

Pirates of Silicon Valley is a made for TV movie that gives an interesting, unflinching look at the beginnings of two of the greatest computer developers on the planet. Steve Jobs (Apple) and Bill Gates (Duh). A little slow but very entertaining if you’re into that sort of thing…which I am. I hear that Steve Jobs HATED this movie…which I can understand since it basically portrays him as a raging hemorrhoid infested asshole.
