Mike’s July DVD Picks

Hey people, Mike here. We have quite a bit of stuff to get through this month so with no adieu what-so-ever, here we go.

Saving Private Ryan: Special Limited Edition
Release Date: 7/5/05

This version of Saving Private Ryan looks pretty much the same as the version I already have, including extras and what not but I’m including it on this month’s list anyway. Why? Because it’s one of the best, grittiest WWII films I’ve ever seen. Period.

The Bad News Bears Collection
Release Date: 7/12/05

Man I adored these movies as a kid. Now I get to drive my wife crazy with even more movies from my childhood! Kickass!

The Best of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe
Release Date: 7/12/05

Dude, it’s He-Man on DVD! What more reason do you need? Now granted, it’s not a complete season or anything but it’s cheap so by the power of Greyskull, pick it up.

Bill & Ted’s Most Excellent Collection
Release Date: 7/12/05

OK, if you live in a vacuum or bubble or on a tropical island and don’t actually already own at least the first of these two movies then leave right now, buy this set and then come back to us when you fully understand what you did wrong and are ready to make restitution. About the set…this is a 3 disc set that contains both movies and a bonus disc just FULL of extra features. What more reason do you need?

Cry-Baby: Director's Cut
Release Date: 7/12/05

John Waters and Johnny Depp working together on the same movie? There’s no way this film could have been anything less than the cult favorite that it is. You get never-before-seen deleted scenes, a documentary with cast interviews AND John Waters’ great characters and dialogue.

Dodgeball: Unrated
Release Date: 6/14/05

I can’t even imagine what is going to be “unrated” about this DVD but do we really even care? I didn’t think so. Ben Stiller rules and Vince Vaughn ain’t too shabby either.

Freaked
Release Date: 7/12/05

OK, I’m including Freaked in this month’s picks for the sheer weird factor. A stranger movie you would be hard pressed to find. The only real reason you need for buying this DVD is simple, Alex Winter(Bill S. Preston Esquire), and many other fairly famous people dressed up in insane foam latex suits that look like something straight out of a Gwar show.

Hercules/ Hercules II (The Adventures of Hercules)
Release Date: 7/12/05

I don’t know why I like these bad 80’s loincloth movies so much but I do. There’s no real reason for me to recommend these beyond that. I mean, frankly, they’re not very good. I just like them.

The Ring Two: Unrated Edition
Release Date: 7/12/05

Time to let that creepy little girl with her hair all in her face scare the poopoo out of you again!

Constantine: Deluxe Edition
Release Date: 7/19/05

OK, so this is kind of the supernatural version of The Matrix. Who cares, it’s a cool movie and Satan has never felt so oily and creepy as when Peter Stormare played him. Man I love that guy. He always plays the most over-the-top characters you could possibly imagine. Whether you’re a fan of ole’ Ted “Theodore” Logan’s acting style or not, I really works in this film. A killer flick overall.

The Crow: Wicked Prayer
Release Date: 7/19/05

Ok, so the last episode of this series didn’t exactly blow my socks off. So this film is straight to video and has had mixed reviews at best. I don’t care, I’m still going to buy it. I’m too much of a fan of Brandon Lee, Alex Proyas and James O’Barr. I will probably buy everything that every gets released with The Crow stamped on it.

Remington Steele: Season One
Release Date: 7/26/05

I can’t believe they are using his Bond days as the major selling point right on the front of the box! I love Pierce Brosnan and even as a kid I used to watch Remington Steele all the time. I think it’s really cool that this great show is finally ending up on DVD where it belongs.
