Mike's June 2006 DVD Pics
Hey people, Mike here. Remember, each week my picks will be gathered and archived in this monthly list.
Black Hawk Down: Extended Cut
Release Date: 06/06
Well, last week I started with one of my all-time favorite War films, Platoon, so I thought it only fitting to start this week with yet another. Now, I know that Black Hawk Down is not TECHNICALLY a war film since the incident depited in the film isn't by definition a war, HOWEVER, any movie that shows military fighting on this hardcore of a scale gets the war classification from me. This film defines hardcore and it tells a story that needs to be told since we Americans seem to have a VERY short memory. Except for those who were involved and their loved ones, who really remembers the fighting in Somalia? See, I told you that this is a story that needs to be told. Now on a more specific, disc related front, this particular release is an extended cut of the film and has a documentary called, FRONTLINE: Ambush in Mogadishu Documentary but is otherwise a little light on extras. Still, if you like good war films then this is a REALLY good one to add to the collection.

Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid: Collector's Edition
Release Date: 06/06
OK, unlike the Black Hawk Down: Extended Cut DVD, this one actually has enough special features to REALLY call it a "Collector's Edition." Two commentary tracks, two featurettes, two documentaries, mulitple interviews and deleted scenes. This set is a freakin gold mine if you're a fan of this film...and if you're not then you might want to think about going to the video store and buying some taste.

Dazed And Confused: The Criterion Collection
Release Date: 06/06
Not a whole lot to really say about this one. A great film done up super nifty Criterion style. I mean, it's kind of a no brainer really.

Underworld: Evolution
Release Date: 06/06
One of the many films that I meant to write a review of and just never got around to. Well, I didn't get to it but I did manage to slap it onto this week's list. This is a fairly fun film, it's not as good as the first one but it manages to be entertaining without butchering the history established in the original too badly. All in all, very worthy of adding to the pile of DVDs that we all know you have off in the corner.

The Princess Bride: Dread Pirate Edition
Release Date: 06/13
OK, Micah already put this one on his list so I won't bore you with redundancy, BUT, this DVD is freakin packed to the gills with extras and if you truely love this film(and who doesn't?) then by all means, pick it up. And remember, "My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

Thinking XXX
Release Date: 06/13
Now this one has to have the freakin biggest "DUH!" tag next it of all time. It's basically a documentary with a bunch of porn stars where they come out in street clothes and no make-up and pose for a few pictures. Then they get interviewed while getting their hair and make done and then come out nude and take more pictures. Like I said, freakin DUH!

Zorro, The Gay Blade
Release Date: 06/13
This one may look a little silly, and it is...big time, but it's one of my all-time favorites from my childhood. I mean, come on, it's Zorro...but gay. How can you not love that?

Nate And Hayes
Release Date: 06/20
I freakin love this movie. Granted, it's a bad Indiana Jones rip-off sort of movie set in the colonial era as opposed to the 1940's but it's still just so much fun to watch. I think the low production value makes it more endearing in a way. If for no other reason then you need this just to see Tommy Lee Jones playing a pirate...with a southern accent. Classic stuff!

The Omen: Collector's Edition
Release Date: 06/20
OK, if you have even a SHRED of self respect as a horror film fan then you already know and love this film. Here's your chance to pick up a copy packed to the gills with extras including deleted scenes, commentary track and tons of documentaries. Hands down, one of the best horror films ever.

Ultraviolet: Unrated Extended Cut
Release Date: 06/27
There really does come a point where one has to ask, "Man, how many freakin sci-fi movies can Milla Jovovich make?" Well, apparently at least one more. Ultraviolet is one of the many films I didn't get to see that I REALLY wanted to see this year. Hopefully I will love it and not be embarrassed by putting it on this list. Only time will tell.

Yellowbeard
Release Date: 06/27
You know, I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've seen this movie. WAY too many tmies most people would say, but I think not nearly enough. I mean, come on, Cheech and Chong, Marty Feldman AND John Cleese all in the same freakin film...a pirate film no less? How could you NOT watch that over and over and over and over?
