Mike’s
June DVD Picks
OK
guys, here is the first ever installment(hopefully the first of many)
of Mike’s DVD Picks
for June 2004. There’s a lot of good stuff coming out these days
and unfortunately most of us can’t afford them all. Have no fear,
though, because I am here to guide you to total movie bliss. Um, yeah…
Well, without further ado…on to this month’s picks!

Eurotrip
Release Date: 6/1/04
Despite several attempts and much planning I unfortunately
missed this movie when it was in the theatre. Needless to say I was
first in line to buy it the day it came out and I’m glad I did.
I know a lot of people out there in the real world don’t enjoy
a good raunchy comedy but I on the other hand really do. Must be that
maleness running around inside my overfed and under-exercised body.
Yep, I’m a real sex machine… The plot is what you might
expect from the same people who brought you Road Trip, as a
matter of fact, if you paid any attention at all in Road Trip
you’ll even recognize a couple of the same gags. Anyway, this
movie is filled with good laughs and naked breasts, like you guys actually
care about anything else, and the unrated version of the DVD is filled
with neat extras like the “Unrated and Nude Scene Indexes”
and the “ Nude Beach Exposed”. Just be careful while watching
the nude beach scenes as there is an abundance of wiener running around.

Black
Hawk Down (Superbit)
Release Date: 6/15/04
I have the feeling that I tread on thin ice with
this one due to the overabundance of anti-American sentiment flying
around these days and as such let me start this one by saying…Fuck
You! There, don’t you feel better now? I don’t care how
you cut it, this movie is about as intense as it gets. Several squads
of soldiers pinned down by an entire city that wants nothing more than
to see them dead and then having to fight their way through. Come on,
this is the stuff that great action movies are made of. Like America
or not, this movie kicks ass and what better way to experience it than
Superbit?

Badder
Santa: Unrated
Release Date: 6/22/04
OK, I admit it. I haven’t actually seen
this movie yet but quite honestly, the prospect of getting to see an
admittedly blitzed Billy Bob Thronton stumbling around on screen is
too good to pass up.

Secret
Window
Release Date: 6/22/04
Yet another movie that I missed in the theatres
in its original release. Why do I have it on my DVD Picks list? Two
words, Johnny Depp. He hasn’t made a movie yet that I didn’t
like and teamed up with Stephen King I really feel like this movie will
kick much ass. Only time(and money to buy it) will tell if I’m
right though.

Barbershop
2: Back In Business
Release Date: 6/29/04
OK, this is the last movie this month I will recommend
that I haven’t actually seen yet, I promise. I’m recommending
this one because I really enjoyed Barbershop and since they
actually managed to get the whole original cast back I have high hopes
for the sequel. Besides, Ice Cube has proven himself to be a comedy
force to be reckoned with time and time again. Who would have thought
back in his NWA, “hardcore” days that he could be this funny?

Blazing

Release Date: 6/29/04
It’s Blazing Saddles. Do I really
need to say more?

Ron
White: They Call Me “Tater Salad”
Release Date: 6/29/04
I love standup comedy. I mean I really love standup
comedy. As a matter of fact, a few guys I work with have tried to talk
me into going to open mic night at local comedy clubs several times.
With that said, I had the pleasure of first seeing Ron White on the
Blue Collar Comedy Tour DVD several months ago. Man, nobody
can tell a story like this man. He was by far the standout on that DVD
even amoungst well known comedians like Jeff Foxworthy and Bill Engvail.
Ron’s bit was made even funnier(to me anyway) because he was so
obviously smashed as soon as he walked out on stage. Seeing that one
brief bit made me into a big Ron White fan. Nothing makes you feel better
about yourself than watching a true hillbilly, drunk off his ass, comedian
make fun of the stupid things he does in his own life.

South Park: The Complete First Four Seasons
Release Date: 6/29/04
Sometime back around or so ’97 I went over
to a friends house and he told me about this amazing new show on Comedy
Central. It was called South Park and it was a cartoon but
it was the most over-the-top hilarious show he had ever seen. Only two
episodes had aired so far but he managed to record them both. I was
intrigued so I sat down to watch my first two episodes of South
Park ever. Then I rewound the tape and watched them again. A legacy
was born. Several years later as the DVD market really began to boom,
Comedy Central started to release season one of South Park
on DVD a few episodes at a time. Those of us who loved those first episodes
were overjoyed, until… For some reason Comedy Central stopped
releasing the episodes in sequential order and started releasing theme
DVDs such as South Park: Winter Wonderland and South Park:
The Chef Experience. Then again in 2003 they actually released
the first two seasons of South Park but once again stalled. Now, though,
comes the grand daddy of them all, South Park: The Complete First
Four Seasons. Hopefully they won’t stall out…yet again,
and will continue to bring us the remaining seasons on DVD. By the way,
you don’t have to buy all four seasons in one big pack. They are
also releasing the four seasons in individual packs but to be honest,
I’m lazy and its much easier to recommend one set of DVDs than
it is to recommend five(if you count the four season pack) different
sets.

The
Dukes of Hazzard: The Complete First Season
Release Date: 6/1/04

Quantum
Leap: The Complete First Season
Release Date: 6/8/04
I decided to combine my recommendation of The
Dukes of Hazzard: The Complete First Season with Quantum Leap:
The Complete First Season. Why you ask? Simple, I can sum up my
feelings for these two DVD sets in one quick sentence. Man, I’m
all over these like a fat kid on a cupcake.

The Man Show: Season Two
Release Date: 6/15/04
The Man Show.
It is quite possibly the greatest TV show I have ever seen. Funny parody
commercials, cool guy gadgets, two of the biggest smart-asses known
to man as hosts, and of course who could forget the Juggies. As far
as season two goes, I couldn’t sum it up better than Comedy Central
did on the box, “The chauvinistic celebration of all things
male continues…”

Nip/Tuck:
The Complete First Season
Release Date: 6/15/04
About a year or so ago, pre Janet Jackson’s
Super Bowl nipple party, I was basking in a new breed of dramatic TV
shows. Apparently, people were watching more shows like The Sopranos
on HBO and less shows like Felicity on WB. Why? Because quite
honestly, who wants to watch some whinny, albeit really hot, girl go
through the trials and tribulations of dating when you can watch some
Italian gangster whack people at will, while cussing up a storm? From
this new crop of shows came this kooky looking show called Nip/Tuck.
As I watched the series premier more often than not my jaw was on the
ground. Not only does this show have lots of Hollywood starlet wannabes
running around barely contained by their outfits, if they are indeed
wearing outfits, but it also has some rather graphic surgery scenes.
This show relies heavily on shock value but still manages to deliver
a compelling story, though it is quite twisted and depraved more often
than not. But then again, isn’t that why we watch shows like that?

The
A-Team: Season One
Release Date: 6/8/04
B. A. Barakas, Howlin’ Mad Murdock, Face
Man, and of course, Hannibal Smith. If you don’t know who these
guys are then you need to find yourself a different website to get reviews
and recommendations from. Take my advice, you need to buy this DVD set.
I know, you’re welcome.
