Mike’s May DVD Picks

Hey people, Mike here. Once again I have brought you a list of movies so badass that you hate yourself for the rest of your life if you don't buy them...Ok maybe not, but you really do owe it to yourself to add these DVDs to your collection.

The Big Red One: Special Edition
Release Date: 5/3/05

The Big Red One has always been one of my favorite WWII films since I was a kid and first saw it. I was supremely disappointed years later when I found out that the film had been butchered by the studio monkeys(which happens all to often). As it was, Sam Fuller did an amazing job bringing his war expiriences to film but now with over 40 minutes of restored footage this film will finally get the respect it deserves as a WWII masterpiece. The Big Red One: Special Edition is easily my top pick of the month.

Dogtown and Z-Boys: Deluxe Edition
Release Date: 5/3/05

Growing up in a small Texas town in the 80's with little to do other than ride skate boards I was in complete and total awe of guys like Tony Alva, Jay Adams and a young up and comer named Tony Hawk. This documentary was possibly the coolest film I saw last year. It takes an unflinching look at the skate boarding scene of the late 70's and early 80's when a bunch of surf kids from the rough Venice, CA neighborhood known as Dogtown starting riding skate boards and completely changed skating forever and help to bring it where it is today. And thanks to this documentary, we now have Lords of Dogtown which you should see ASAP.

License to Drive

OK, yet again I have a DVD on my list 2 months in a row. All I can say is that it's not my fault that DVD releases sometimes get pushed back.

UFC 51: Super Saturday
Release Date: 5/3/05

OK, this one is a little different than what I usually put on my list but I've been a huge fan of UFC since I saw UFC 2 live back around 92 or 93. MMA(Mixed Martial Atrs) is the ultimate in one on one competition and if you're a guy then there's no way you can't love this stuff.

12 Monkeys: Special Edition
Release Date: 5/10/05

OK, this is the movie that actually made me a Brad Pitt fan. Until 12 Monkeys I always thought he was an over rated pretty boy, which he was, but right about this time he actually started to get pretty good and he stopped totally over acting everything he did. Aside from that, Terry Gilliam and Bruce Willis rock so if you didn't get this DVD the first time around(it's been out of print for a while) then now is the perfect time.

Team America - World Police: Special Collector’s Edition
Release Date: 5/17/05

The newest film made by those two guys who brought you the animated series about those elementary school kids who cuss like sailors and make fun of EVERYTHING. I only have one thing to say about this DVD. Unedited, marionette love scene. Do you REALLY need another reason to get this?

The Aviator
Release Date: 5/24/05

OK, everyone knows that this movie is killer so I'll save myself the carpal tunnel and just say buy it.

MASH: Season Eight Collector’s Edition

The final season for good ole Radar O'Reilly, the ONLY character played by the same actor in both the film AND series. The collection is almost complete...

Man on Fire: All-Access Collector’s Edition
Release Date: 5/24/05

OK, so Denzel doesn't make a movie that isn't good. The difference with this one is that he goes full on hard core. I mean, he kills EVERYBODY. I like these kinds of movies. Should that worry me? Anyway this DVD has lots of extras including 14 deleted scenes, an alternate ending and multiple camera angles so it makes a good addition to your action section.

Legend
Release Date: 5/31/05

OK, I know that most likely you already own a copy of this. If not then what the hell is wrong with you? Anyway, if you're too cheap to spring the extra 5 bucks for the Ultimate Edition then be sure to pick this one up. But then again, why wouldn't you just spend the extra bills?
