Mike's March 2006 DVD Pics

Hey people, Mike here. As always these days...a day late and a dollar short. I won't bother making excuses...I'm just lazy.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: Special Edition
Release Date: 03/07

Yeah! Another Harry Potter! OK, so while this film may not be QUITE as good as Azkaban it’s still a really cool flick and DEFINITELY worth adding to the collection. As a matter fact, right now I’m so poor that I can’t even afford to pay attention but I will still be picking this one up. This movie just reeks cool from start to finish and the effects are truly top notch. For those who don’t know the story, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire centers around the Tri-Wizard tournament which is held between Hogwart’s and two other magic schools and basically only seems important for bragging rights. Now, due to certain recent events, it is determined that only students over the age of 17 are permitted to enter. Of course, though, some how Harry’s name ends up in the drawing and he gets selected to enter the contest. This drawing puts Harry in some REALLY dangerous situations but even better, it creates a nice little subplot where Harry and Ron start fighting because Ron manages to develop a slight inferiority complex. Basically, Rupert Grint owns just about every scene he’s in. Things go from bad to worse when Voldemort shows up and once again tries to kill Harry(man, doesn’t that guy ever give up?), but I’ll let you figure the rest out yourself.

The Warrior
Release Date: 03/07

OK, I really don’t know anything about this movie but it does have Ziyi Zhang in it and well…that’s good enough reason for me to buy this and should be enough reason for you too.

Crimson Tide: Unrated Extended Edition
Release Date: 03/14

OK, if you haven’t seen Crimson Tide yet then RUN, do not walk, and go buy this DVD as soon as possible. First off, it’s got Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman. That alone should be reason enough to buy it. On top of that, though, is the fact that this movie flat out kicks some serious ass. Basically, the story is that a rouge Russian general has ceased control of the Russian government and is threatening to launch nuclear weapons at the US. The plot centers around the US nuclear submarine, Alabama, where Hackman is the Captain and Washington is his second in command. Things get interesting when the Russian general starts preparing to launch his missiles and the Alabama receives orders to launch a pre-emptive strike to stop the Russians. Well, in the insanity a Russian sub loyal to the rouge General attacks the Alabama just as it is receiving another message which damages the radio effectively cutting off the message before any orders can be transmitted. This is where the fun begins because Washington thinks their orders to launch MAY have been changed and Hackman wants to shoot first and ask questions later. What follows is a great standoff between Hackman and Washington and, in my opinion, one of the best Tom Clancy inspired films.

The Ten Commandments: 50th Anniversary Edition
Release Date: 03/21

Seriously, Charlton Heston in a Cecil B. DeMille film…what other excuse do you need? There’s a reason that this film is a major classic.

The Young Riders: The Complete First Season
Release Date: 03/21

Just what we needed in the late 80’s, a TV show about the Pony Express starring a couple of famous family actors(Baldwin and Brolin). Surprisingly, I really liked the show and even though I haven’t seen a single episode ANYWHERE since the show was cancelled I have really found memories of this show and can’t wait to get my hands on this.

If you, like me, don’t have this one yet then you’re now out of excuses…

King Kong: 2 Disc Special Edition (2005)
Release Date: 03/28

There really isn’t much reason to go very deep into these next couple of picks because they are ALL pretty self explanatory. I mean, King Kong, Peter Jackson, WETA, blah, blah, blah. Do you really want me to bore and wax poetic about it? I didn’t think so.

Planet of the Apes: Single Disc Edition
Release Date: 03/28

March is a good month for Heston fans. First The 10 Commandments and now Planet of the Apes…seriously, I’m liking the way is shaping up.

Ron White: You Can't Fix Stupid
Release Date: 03/28

By far the funniest man in the Blue Collar group, in my humble opinion, returns with a brand new DVD of his own. NO ONE, and I do mean NO ONE tells a story like Ron White. I already bought the CD of this show when it came out about a month and a half ago and MAN is it funny. I can’t wait for this to release.
