Micah's October 2005 DVD Pics

Hey people, Mike here. Not a whole lot on my list this month. There were a few others that caught my eye but nothing that I have actually seen and as a general rule I don't like to recommend films I haven't seen yet. Despite that, there are some good things on the list so it's still worth the effort to check it out.

The Man with the Screaming Brain
Release Date: 10/4

Now, having said all that I’m starting the month off with a DVD that I haven’t seen…sue me. It shouldn’t matter that I haven’t this YET, it stars and is directed by Bruce Campbell. Nuff said.

Batman Begins: Deluxe Edition
Release Date: 10/18

When I first heard that someone was making a new Batman film, all I could do was groan. I loved Tim Burton’s Batman contributions but with each new movie things just slid further and further down the drain. Despite my better judgment I started paying attention to some of the details of the newest Dark Knight film and I’m glad I did because this movie rocks! Now I don’t know if I would say that it’s as good as Burton’s original Batman but it’s definitely at least as good as Batman Returns.

The Big Lebowski: Collector's Edition
Release Date: 10/18

He’s The Dude! Not too sure about the Special Features of this disc but this is a great Coen Brothers flick. Jeff Bridges is hilarious and reminds me of every hippie pot head I know in Austin…which is also about half the population of this town. Not too bad till they try and get in a car and get in front of me…

Dark Shadows: The Complete Revival Series
Release Date: 10/18

Dark Shadows is a fairly cool vampire TV show from the early 90’s that not a lot of people know about. It was popular right about the same time that the live action role playing game “Vampire: The Masquerade” popped up among cane and cloak bearers around the country. Luckily the TV show was MUCH cooler than the game which in my home town became the most effective form of birth control around!

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Season One Volume 1
Release Date: 10/18

Finally! He-Man in complete season format…well almost. This is only the first half but still! Man I used to LOVE this cartoon…and the toys and anything else I could get my hands on that had He-Man on it. I actually used to have the Castle Grey Skull play set. All the other kids in my neighborhood were completely jealous of me. I think one of these days I just might have to have a Thunder Cats and He-Manathon!

Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills
Release Date: 10/25

OK, I’m not gonna try and come up with anything clever or funny to say about this one because there is not a single thing that is funny about this. It’s a documentary about three young boys who were murdered in West Memphis, Arkansas and the three only slightly older boys who were charged with their murders. As horrible as the murder of children is, almost as bad is the conviction of three innocent teens based on “evidence” such as Pink Floyd T-shirts, Metallica CDs and Steven King novels along with the illegal and coerced confession by an minor who was interrogated for 12 hours straight while being denied legal council and access to his parents AND literally had the IQ of Forrest Gump. All three have spent the last 12 years in prison, two serving life sentences and one on death row. The most frightening thing about this, to me, is that I was not so different from these guys when I was their age…and I am their age. If they can be convicted of a horrible crime with NO evidence then you or I could have been too. The prosecution’s whole case was based upon the idea that the three murdered boy were killed as part of a satanic ritual. I find it very telling that to this day the FBI maintains that there is NO evidence that a satanic ritual killing has EVER taken place in the US. If you have a problem with injustice then you NEED to see this documentary. Also, be sure to check out Paradise Lost 2: Revelations. Free the West Memphis 3!

The Wizard of Oz: Three-Disc Collector’s Edition
Release Date: 10/25

I think everyone should own a copy of The Wizard of Oz. Everyone. Of course, having said that I must admit that I don’t yet own a copy but there’s a good chance that I might remedy that this month.

Well, it was short and sweet but now it's over. I hope you guys find something new to check out and if nothing else PLEASE get educated about the West Memphis 3. They need as much help as possible to get a new, FAIR trial.
