Mike's January 2006 DVD Pics

Hey people, Mike here. Ya know, I had assumed that being right after Christmas, January was gonna be a rather bland month for releases, boy was I wrong. On our plate for this evening we have two great Robyn Williams films, a classic sci-fi, two iconic Westerns and more sequels to The Pink Panther than you can shake a stick at. All in all, a month to really make you drool.

Snatch: Delux Edition
Release Date: 01/03

OK, not only is this one of the GREAT crime comedies of modern cinema but this edition is absolutely packed to the gills with extras. Pikey subtitles, making of featurette, deleted scenes, photo gallery, story board comparison, collectible movie scrapbook, Snatch poker kit and “hidden extras” all for less that $15…I mean come on, how much convincing do you really need?

Wedding Crashers: Uncorked Edition
Release Date: 01/03

As you know I tend to shy away from putting movies on my list that I haven’t seen but with Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn and the incomparable Mr. Walken all in one movie there’s no way this film could be anything less than classic. I’m drooling to get this one so I can spend a carefree night laughing my ass off.

Hustle & Flow
Release Date: 01/10

As Micah pointed out in his Picks of the Month, this film was absolutely killer. I too initially only went to see this because of free tickets to an advance screening and also thought it was just going to be a cheap 8 Mile rip off. Man I couldn’t have been more wrong. This is a GREAT film and as a musician I COMPLETELY identified with DJay…even though I’m not a pimp…or a drug dealer…or a rapper…or black…

Be sure to check out my review!

The Magnificent Seven: Collector’s Edition
Release Date: 01/10

There isn’t a whole lot of information about this edition to explain what’s so collectable about it yet but it is one of the all-time great Westerns so it would be pretty freakin hard for this 2 disc set to not be worth the price. Just buy it, you’ll thank me later.

Return of the Pink Panther
Release Date: 01/10

My Pink Panther recommendations will be explained in more detail farther down…

Transporter 2
Release Date: 01/10

This is the last film for this month’s list that I haven’t seen…and man am I mad I missed it. Like my esteemed colleague Micah, I LOVED the first film. Except for a couple of wholly unbelievable sequences I can watch that whole film with a HUGE smile on my face. I really wanted to see this film in the theatre but at the time I was working out of town 6 days a week and my wife didn’t want me to see it with out her which of course means that I never saw it at all. I’ve heard a lot of really good things about it and I simply can’t wait to sink into the couch and just soak this one in.

The Wild Bunch: Director’s Cut
Release Date: 01/10

Look it’s a 2 for 1...2 legendary Westerns released in 1 month! This one has never before seen outtakes, additional scenes and three different documentaries. It’s a good month for fans of killer Westerns.

Dead Poets Society: Special Edition
Release Date: 01/17

One of the all-time greatest coming of age films, period. I have always loved Robyn Williams and Dead Poets Society is Williams at his finest. There simply aren’t enough good things to say about this film so I won’t attempt to cheapen it. Instead I only ask you to join me as I stand on my desk and shout, “Oh Captain, my Captain!”

Good Morning Vietnam: Special Edition
Release Date: 01/17

“What does three up and three down mean to you soldier?!”
“End of an inning?”
What else can you say?

Dune: Extended Edition
Release Date: 01/31

Dune has always been one of my all time favorite films…and I tend to shy away when anyone asks me about favorites because I truly love so many movies, but this captivated me as a child in a way that only films like Star Wars could. Much like Star Wars, this film change the way I saw movies for ever, and it’s great to finally see the extended cut coming to DVD. I saw it one time YEARS ago on TV and have never seen it since. This one gets my highest recommendation of the month.

The Legend of Zorro: Special Edition
Release Date: 01/31

Now this wasn’t a great film, it’s probably not even quite as good as the first one, but it was fun as hell.

Trail of the Pink Panther
Release Date: 01/31

OK, I decided to put all of my Pink Panther picks all into one paragraph since my love of all of these films is the same. The Pink Panther films are among a group of several others that I was raised with and will always love whole heartedly. Peter Sellers is a freakin genious and I will always be a huge fan of his work. This month's releases are geared towards those of us who were to cheap or poor to buy the nice boxed set that came out a couple of months ago. These films are a MUST HAVE for any fan of true comedy.
