Mike’s January DVD Picks

Hey people, Mike here with another exciting installment of my picks of the month. Lot's of good stuf fthis month so if anyone actually has any money left after Christmas then this month will be like Christmas all over again. Enjoy!

Troy
Release Date: 1/4/05

Man I love epic movies. There’s just something about seeing thousands of people on screen preparing for battle that just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Now while I’ll agree that Troy isn’t the greatest epic movie ever made it sure has a helluva lot going for it. For instance, Orlando Bloom may leave me a little wanting as far as his performance goes but Eric Bana and Brad Pitt were incredible, especially their amazing fight in the middle of the movie. So be a good boy or girl watch Wolfgang Petersens newest excursion. And guys, try not to drool on your significant other when you see Diane Kruger’s naked backside.

The Fifth Element: Ultimate Edition
Release Date: 1/11/05

OK, so I’m sure you already own a copy of “The Fifth Element” and if you don’t then please step away from your computer, proceed to your nearest DVD retailer (or better yet, go to ours!) and buy this DVD today. This movie completely and totally blew me away the first time I saw it. Come to think of it, I still blows me away every time I see it. Everything about this movie is simply stunning. It oozes style and it has a great sense of humor and killer action. This is the movie that introduced me to Luc Beeson and to think, he wrote the original draft for this when he was a kid.

Ghost in the Shell: Special Edition
Release Date: 1/11/05

OK, for the five or six of you out there who don’t like anime this movie, much like “Akira” is a benchmark for the genre. Cool style, great visuals and tons of action. “Ghost in the Shell,” is one of the first anime films that I really got into and helped to kind of open my eyes to the whole genre. Thanks to the U.S. release of “Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence” we are gifted with this special edition release loaded with lots of extra goodies including, among many other things, a full color 2 sided special edition poster. So if you’ve been living in a closet for the last several years and don’t yet have a copy of “Ghost in the Shell” in you’re library, this is definitely the version to pick up.

Gilligan's island: The Complete Second Season
Release Date: 1/11/05

Duh, it’s Gilligan.

Hunter: The Complete First Season
Release Date: 1/11/05

I used to watch this show religiously as a kid. At first because my mom liked it and we only had one TV. Later though, I really started to like it and I think that Fred Dryer is the best pro football player turned actor around. Period. “Hunter” caused quite the stir when it originally aired because it was a little too violent for those who elected themselves to be the country’s moral watchdogs…which of course made the show ten times more popular than it was. It was a an edgy show with a great hard-line star offset by an attractive partner. You know, the stuff good TV shows are made of. If you, like me, enjoy this new TV on DVD phenomenon then this is a must have in your Drama collection.

Leon: The Professional - Deluxe Edition
Release Date: 1/11/05

Where as “The Fifth Element” introduced me to Luc Beeson, “Leon: The Professional” made me realize that Beeson is a god among filmmakers. This movie also introduced both Jean Reno AND the ultra yummy(though not at the time) Natalie Portman to the world. Thank you Mr. Beeson, thank you. Anyway, combine these two with an amazingly evil performance by the legendary Gary Oldman and you have yourself a movie that would have been great even if the story sucked. Luckily for us, the story doesn’t suck at all. Plus with all the goodies on this disc, like the “10 Year Reunion” featurette you really don’t have much of an excuse to not buy this DVD.

The Village
Release Date: 1/11/05

Finally, M. Night Shyamalan’s amazing character piece comes to DVD. Please note, I did NOT say horror movie. A lot of people didn’t give this movie a fair shake because in all honesty, it really wasn’t marketed correctly. The trailers made it out to be a horror film and it simply isn’t so everyone was thrown for a loop when they didn’t get at all what they expected. So if you saw the movie and didn’t like it the first time maybe you should try it again with an open mind and if you’ve never seen it then check it out but understand that it is NOT a horror or thriller film.

Alien Vs Predator
Release Date: 1/25/05

OK, this wasn’t a great film. Why would I put it on my list then? Well, personally I simply thought it was a lot of fun. If you’re a hardcore “Alien” or “Predator” fan and really care about the established history of either film then this may not be the film for you. However, if you simply enjoy a good “Kill ‘em all and let God sort ‘em out” style film then you may get as much of a kick out of this one as I did.

Backbeat: Special Edition
Release Date: 1/25/05

“Backbeat” is the Hollywoodized history of the pre-Beatle Mania Beatles. It’s the story of the fifth Beatle if you will. It also happens to be a really cool film with great Beatles music. If you like movies such as “That Thing You Do” (and come on, who doesn’t really) then you would be absolutely retarded not to own this movie. And that’s all I have to say about that.

The BeastMaster: Special Edition
Release Date: 1/25/05

Yes! Another version of “The BeastMaster!” To me, “The BeastMaster” is one of those films like the “Evil Dead” films. No matter how many different versions they release, I still want to buy more. New documentaries, pull out posters, the original screen play. God I love DVD.

The Dukes of Hazard: The Complete Second Season
Release Date: 1/25/05

Yet another chance to see Daisy in those shorts! Thank you God for creating Catherine Bach, the woman who started the phenomenon of the “Daisy Duke” shorts, the woman of my pre-pubescent dreams. Oh yeah, the show was pretty good too.

MacGyver: The Complete First Season
Release Date: 1/25/05

I LOVED “MacGyver” as a kid. I watched EVERY episode like my life depended on it. Just the chance to see him make all that neat stuff from piles of crap was the highlight of my entire week. Now granted, as the series got into the later seasons and he went from battling corrupt governments and madmen intent on taking over the world to drug dealers, it did get a little old. However, the first few seasons were pure gold and “MacGyver” still ranks as one of my all time favorite TV shows.

Married with Children: The Complete Third Season
Release Date: 1/25/05

And here is one of my other all time favorite TV shows. There wasn’t a single character in the whole series who wasn’t amazing at what they did. This show should go down in history as one of the greats. It should be considered my generations “The Honeymooners.”

Pulp Fiction: Collector’s Edition
Release Date: 1/25/05

OK, so everyone owns this movie already. You may even have bought this version before since this is basically just a re-issue. BUT, for those who didn’t pick it up the first go round NOW is the time to strike. This thing has TONS of extras. Quentin most definitely does not disappoint with this version so buy this DVD now. It is a moral imperative.

This movie WILL and has probably already started to revolutionize the way movies are made. It is the perfect blend between live action and anime and simply secretes atmosphere. This is quite simply one of the coolest movies you will EVER see.
